Carly Winter — ‘Necessary Evil’ Original Song on Growth & Change
[03:13:10] Coming to the stage, Carly Winter. [03:13:19] Hi, everybody. [03:13:22] Can we give one more hand for all the amazing performers tonight? [03:13:28] Thank you. [03:13:29] My name is Carly. [03:13:33] This is my second year playing at Speak Your Truth. [03:13:37] I had an awesome time last year. [03:13:41] Last year, I played a song about how in, like, [03:13:48] probably seventh to ninth grade, I struggled pretty bad. [03:13:52] And even now, when I think back to that time, [03:13:56] I’m going into my junior year of high school, [03:13:58] and even thinking back at that time, if this makes sense, [03:14:03] like, all my memories are gray. [03:14:06] Like, I really just viewed everything around me [03:14:09] as something negative. [03:14:11] And I played a song kind of about that [03:14:13] and about how I was just in a constant state of aching. [03:14:17] And it was pretty, I don’t know, fraying to talk about it, [03:14:22] especially in front of a room full of people [03:14:24] that won’t judge you for it. [03:14:26] Yeah. [03:14:27] Yeah. [03:14:27] And, yeah, so tonight I’m going to play a song kind of [03:14:33] that I wrote recently about how I don’t, [03:14:37] my emotions aren’t as big anymore in a good way. [03:14:42] I mean, there’s a lot of pros to feeling a lot, [03:14:44] but also a lot of cons and setbacks from that. [03:14:49] But, you know, now I’ve grown a lot, [03:14:51] and I’ve learned how to not feel everything so heavily, [03:14:56] and that’s kind of helped me reach a very peaceful state of mind. [03:15:03] So, yeah, that’s just a little bit of my story. [03:15:06] This song is called Necessary Evil, [03:15:08] and it’s about how change is good, [03:15:11] and you don’t need to be afraid of it. [03:15:13] ¶¶ [03:15:26] The floors are sticky [03:15:31] ¶ Doors opened at six [03:15:34] ¶ They kicked out the boy in the board shorts [03:15:42] ¶ I grabbed my things [03:15:46] ¶ Wanted to get home quick [03:15:50] ¶ And I realized I had something [03:15:54] ¶ That I didn’t have before [03:15:55] ¶ That I didn’t have before [03:15:55] ¶ That I didn’t have before [03:15:55] ¶ That I didn’t have before [03:15:56] ¶ That I didn’t have to fight for [03:15:59] ¶¶ [03:16:07] ¶ And my friends told me [03:16:10] ¶ That they spoke to God [03:16:12] ¶ As if they were one of the twelve at the supper [03:16:18] ¶ And I thought his message [03:16:24] ¶ Was to love me [03:16:25] ¶ Was to love me [03:16:25] ¶ Was to love me [03:16:25] ¶ Was to love me [03:16:26] ¶ Was to love me [03:16:26] ¶ Was to love what you’ve got [03:16:28] ¶ But then they told Bella she’d burn [03:16:32] ¶ For being Lucy’s lover [03:16:35] ¶ I guess it’s my bad [03:16:40] ¶ The fact that we’ve been getting along [03:16:44] ¶ I’m just something to talk and to see on the weekends [03:16:48] ¶ But is that so wrong? [03:16:52] ¶ My skin stays burnt [03:16:54] ¶ But pale under the sun [03:16:56] ¶ Underneath [03:17:00] ¶ And my body hurt [03:17:02] ¶ But I learned that’s the earth changing for me [03:17:15] ¶ I’ve never dealt with kindness [03:17:18] ¶ I’ve never dealt with you [03:17:22] ¶ Our paths are too damn different [03:17:25] ¶ To know [03:17:26] ¶ If you are what you do [03:17:29] ¶ But I never got the chance [03:17:39] ¶ To tell them [03:17:39] ¶ That I didn’t think [03:17:41] ¶ That joke was funny [03:17:44] ¶ Their only role was receivable [03:17:48] ¶ I could’ve listened to the cants [03:17:54] ¶ But I got it right [03:17:54] ¶ I love her [03:17:55] ¶ I got it right [03:17:55] ¶ But I got it right [03:17:55] ¶ But I got it right [03:17:55] ¶ But I got it right [03:17:55] ¶ But I got it right [03:17:55] ¶ But I got it right [03:17:56] right on the money. I think I knew that I was capable. I guess it’s my bad, the fact that [03:18:11] we’ve been getting along. If I’m just something to talk at and to see on the weekends, well, [03:18:19] is that so wrong? My skin stays burnt and pale underneath. My body hurts, but I learned [03:18:32] that’s the earth, and it’s changing for me. No, I never got the chance to tell them. I [03:18:48] don’t think. [03:18:49] That joke is funny. Your only role was receivable. Could’ve listened to what you said, but you [03:19:02] watched me get it right on the money. I’ve always known that I am capable. Your voice [03:19:15] sounded faint, saying you’ve all [03:19:19] people, and called out my name, far away and feeble. The way things change, it’s the last thing [03:19:33] from lethal. The way I’ll never be the same, it’s a necessary, necessary evil. [03:19:49] The way I’ll never be the same, it’s the last thing from lethal. The way I’ll never be the same, it’s the last thing from lethal. [03:19:53] Thank you, everybody. Thank you for listening. My name’s Carly. Thank you so much. Thank you to speak your truth. This night has been amazing, and I’ll see you all around. [03:20:09] Give it up for Carly.
